DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway Firmware Procedures

After programming the IP address into the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway, you are ready to check the protocol firmware version, and if necessary, upload the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway with the appropriate firmware.

DeviceMaster UP models typically contain SocketServer, the default application from the factory.

[Note]
Note

You may need to upload the firmware depending on the DeviceMaster UP model you purchased, the DeviceMaster UP may or may not have protocol loaded that you want to implement.

DeviceMaster EIP, DeviceMaster MOD, and DeviceMaster PNIO models have the appropriate protocol loaded. Make sure that verify that the latest version is loaded on your DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway.

Models that have a protocol loaded on the DeviceMaster UP are identified in PortVision DX and the DeviceMaster UP is labeled accordingly

You can use PortVision DX, an application for Windows systems to check the protocol firmware version and upload the latest version. Optionally, you can use the Comtrol Linux Firmware Uploader or Redboot.

Firmware Procedures Using PortVision DX

If necessary, you can use the following procedures to verify you have the appropriate protocol firmware loaded and that it is the latest version.

Checking the Protocol Firmware Version

If necessary, use this procedure to check whether you have the appropriate firmware on the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway and whether it is the latest version.

  1. If necessary, start PortVision DX and scan the network.

  2. Check the protocol firmware version number of the Software Version for the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway.

  3. Check to see if a later version is available and if necessary, upload the protocol firmware

  4. If the protocol firmware version on the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway is current, you are ready to configure the serial ports.

Uploading Protocol Firmware

Use this procedure to upload the latest version of the protocol firmware for your environment into the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway.

Note

Technical support does not recommend updating firmware across a WAN. For best results, connect the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway directly to a PC or laptop to upload firmware.

The DeviceMaster UP16 only supports Modbus Router.

  1. Make sure that you have located the latest firmware version.

  2. Execute the protocol firmware .msi file.

    1. Click Run to start the file installation procedure or Save to save the file to your site, and then execute the .msi file and click Start to begin the file installation procedure.

    2. If necessary, click Run to any Internet Security warnings.

    3. Click Next at the Setup Wizard.

    4. Click I accept the terms in the License Agreement and then Next.

    5. Click Next to install protocol firmware in the default directory (C:\Comtrol\protocol_name\), where protocol is the type of firmware or browse to another location. Make sure that you remember the path where you place the files because you will need to access the .cmtl file during the installation procedure.

    6. Click Install and the click Finish.

  3. If necessary, open PortVision DX.

  4. Right-click the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway for which you want to update, click Advanced | Upload Firmware, browse and select the firmware protocol .cmtl file, and then click Open.

  5. Click Yes to the Upload Firmware message that warns you that this is a sensitive process. It may take a few moments for firmware to upload onto the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway. The DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway reboots itself during the upload process.

  6. Click OK to the advisory message about waiting to use the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway until the status reads ON-LINE. In the next polling cycle, PortVision DX updates the List View pane and displays the new firmware protocol version.

  7. Configure the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway port characteristics for your environment using the embedded web pages on the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway. There are two ways that you can access the embedded web page:

    • PortVision DX, right-click on the appropriate DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway unit and click Webpage.

    • Open your web browser and enter the IP address of the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway.

Use the appropriate document if you need information about web page configuration.

Checking the Bootloader Version

Use this procedure to check the Bootloader version on the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway.

  1. If necessary, open PortVision DX.

  2. Right-click the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway and click Reboot Device.

  3. Click Yes to the Confirm Reboot query.

Uploading the Latest Bootloader

[Note]
Note

Technical Support does not recommend updating Bootloader across a WAN. For best results, connect the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway directly to a PC or laptop to upload Bootloader.

Make sure that power is not interrupted while uploading Bootloader. Power interruption while uploading Bootloader will require that the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway must be sent into Pepperl+Fuchs Comtrol, Inc. so that it can be re-flashed.

If you are not successful uploading the protocol firmware into the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway, do not upload Bootloader.

Use this procedure to upload the latest version of Bootloader into the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway.

  1. Make sure that you have located the latest Bootloader version.

  2. If necessary, open PortVision DX.

  3. Right-click the DeviceMaster Industrial Gateway for which you want to update, click Upload Firmware, browse to the Bootloader .cmtl file, and then click Open.
