RocketPort EXPRESS SMPTE Utilities and Diagnostics

Utilities

Technical support recommends using the Pepperl+Fuchs Comtrol, Inc. Utility to verify that the RocketPort EXPRESS SMPTE is functioning properly. Test Terminal (Wcom2) and Port Monitor (Pmon2) are packaged in the utility and can be used to test the serial ports.

You can use the previous discussion for information about creating and executing the bootable Diagnostics.

The Test Terminal program enables you to open a port, send characters and commands to the port, and toggle the control signals. This application can be used to troubleshoot communications on a port-by-port basis.

Using Test Terminal and a loop-back plug on a port will help test serial ports and verify port operation by allowing you to send data out the port on the transmit side, loop the data back to the receive side and view the received data on the screen.

If you have a peripheral device connected to the serial port and know the device’s command set, you can also send commands to the device. For example, if you have a modem connected to the port, you can use AT commands to query the modem and dial out to the host system.

Port Monitor offers a summary of device statistics in one view. It also enables you to verify operation of device ports from a single window. The statistics are displayed in a familiar spreadsheet model: each COM port is a horizontal row, and each vertical column displays a variable or value for the respective COM port, for simplified port monitoring and superior ease of use.

Port Monitor can also produce statistics and reports that can help you verify the operation of the COM ports and connected peripherals

Hardware Diagnostics

You may be advised by Technical Support to download and create a Diagnostic CD for the RocketPort EXPRESS SMPTE.

[Note]
Note

Running the bootable diagnostic is typically done as the last resort when troubleshooting problems. Please note that the diagnostic is motherboard dependent and may not run or run with reliable results depending on your system.

  1. To create a bootable diagnostic CD, copy the .iso file to a temporary location and then burn the image to a CD-ROM.

    [Note]
    Note

An .iso file cannot be copied onto a CD but must be burned using an application that burns the image to the CD. If you do not have an application available, you can use this freeware application.

  2. To run the diagnostic, you will need at least one loopback plug. A loopback plug was shipped with the RocketPort EXPRESS SMPTE. To build a loopback plug, see the RocketPort EXPRESS SMPTE User Guide.

  3. To start the diagnostic, reboot your system with the Diagnostics CD in the drive and follow the instructions in the diagnostic.

[Note]
Note

If the Diagnostic CD does not boot the PC, you may need to change your BIOS settings so that the PC can boot from a CD drive.
